Gorky's Zygotic Mynci were a Welsh Alternative rock band, formed in Carmarthen, west Wales in 1991. Gorky's music followed unconventional time signatures and structures, as well as instrumentation. Experimental and unfocused their music boasted everything from droning moog synthesizers, slurring trombones and steel guitars to strings with stylophone in the mix. Furthermore, the band's lyrics were rarely about conventional pop/rock subjects, and they frequently sang in Welsh, sometimes switching back and forth in the same song, which made their already odd music sound even more alien to most listeners. Nevertheless, they produced boffo surrealistic gems. Sounding like a bizarrely sweet and whimsical cross between progressive rock, psychedelia, and pure pop, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci were one of the most original and distinctive bands to emerge from the vital post-Brit-pop Welsh scene of the mid-'90s.   The band were often championed by legendary BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel; other than that it was extremely rare to hear Welsh language music on such a popular station. Gorky's developed a strong cult following in Britian, as well as America, ranking behind Super Furry Animals as the most popular band to emerge from the mid-'90s Welsh scene. Being lumped into the Britpop scene nearly scored the Gorky’s a few well-deserved hits, but the band bizarrely and cruelly fell short of the top 40 on nearly every attempt. Gorky's have the ignominious distinction of being the only group with 8 UK Top 75 singles without ever making the Top 40. They have, however, had singles peaking at 41, 42 and 43.  They split up in May 2006.
