Once again, the passion of Alpert's music is inspiring and electrifying. Long-time fans and salsa lovers will find this album most enjoyable. "DTS is a wonderful way to experience music. I think it's great! " -Herb Alpert Product Details Audio Options: 5.1 DTS for DTS-Capable systems; Label: DTS Entertainment5.1 Producer: Herb Alpert and Oskar Cartaya5.1 Mixed By: Alan Meyerson A Look at DVD-Audio First, we listened to albums on vinyl, then we had CDs, and now there's something called DVD-Audio. What's the difference? A lot! DVD-A is the latest way to hear multichannel, audiophile-quality albums in your home, using your DVD or DVD-Audio player. A DVD-A can hold up to seven times the data of a normal CD, which results in added features and better sound. Also, with its sampling rate higher than that of average CDs (up to 192 kHz, whereas most CDs get 44.1 kHz), you may hear a lot of details in music on a DVD-A that you'd never discover on an average CD. And, since nearly all DVD-As are engineered for multichannel/surround-sound listening (using five or six speakers), with the right equipment, you'll be able to hear your favorite music in breathtaking surround sound. Equipment NeededFirst off, DVD-Audios will not play on normal CD players. You'll need a DVD-Audio player in order to fully capture the capabilities of these discs. A receiver with 5.1 analog inputs and five speakers (left, center, right, left surround, right surround, and a subwoofer) should also be used to capture the surround-sound capabilities of DVD-As. While pure DVD-As will not play on standard DVD players, most releases (including all the titles produced by Warner, Atlantic, and Elektra) contain a Dolby Digital surround-sound mix, making them playable on any DVD player. Though these discs are primarily audio-only, you'll be best off using them in conjunction with your TV, so you can watch the additional onscreen features (see below) and navigate the menus with ease. It's all a little complicated, but music-loving home theater enthusiasts won't be disappointed! Improved SoundThanks to a higher sampling rate than that of both standard DVDs and CDs, DVD-As have an incredibly detailed sound. And, when played through a proper home-theater setup with five or six channels (speakers), you'll get to hear your favorite music in a whole new light--in surround sound. Depending on the remastering, the effect of surround sound on your favorite album can be subtle or dramatic, but generally speaking, every DVD-Audio sounds better than its standard CD counterpart. Additional Onscreen FeaturesThe added onscreen features available on DVD-Audios vary from title to title. DVD-As often have extra unreleased tracks, photo slide shows of the artist performing, song lyrics, music videos, and interviews. But don't expect to get footage of a full concert or videos for every track; DVD-As devote the bulk of their space to high-quality audio-only music. Happy listening! Artist Background One of the most successful instrumental performers in pop history, trumpeter Herb Alpert was also one of the entertainment industry's shrewdest businessmen: A&M, the label he cofounded with partner Jerry Moss, ranks among the most prosperous artist-owned companies ever established. Born March 31, 1935 in Los Angeles, Alpert began playing the trumpet at the age of eight. After serving in the Army, he attempted to forge an acting career, but soon returned to music, recording under the name Dore Alpert for RCA. With Lou Adler, Alpert co-wrote a number of Sam Cooke's most enduring hits, including "Wonderful World " and "Only Sixteen. " Under the name Dante and the Evergreens, he and Adler also recorded a cover of the Hollywood Argyles' "Alley Oop "; additionally, Alpert produced tracks for the surf duo Jan and Dean. In 1962 he teamed with Moss to found A&M Records, scoring a Top Ten hit with the single "The Lonely Bull. " From its humble origins as a company run out of Alpert's garage, A&M grew to become the world's biggest independent label; among its greatest successes were the Carpenters, Cat Stevens, Joe Cocker and Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66. Nevertheless, Alpert and his backing unit the Tijuana Brass remained the label's flagship act: on the strength of the hit "A Taste of Honey, " his 1965 LP Whipped Cream and Other Delights topped the charts, popularizing his Latin-influenced style (dubbed "Ameriachi "). The follow-up, 1965's Going Places, also hit number one, launching the hit "Spanish Flea. " Alpert continued recording throughout the 1990s, producing work like 1991's North on South Street, 1992's Midnight Sun and 1997's Passion Dance. After selling A&M to PolyGram in 1990 for a sum in excess of $500 million, he and Moss founded a new label, Almo Sounds, in 1994; among the imprint's hit artists was the group Garbage. His own albums, including 1997's Passion Dance and 1999's Colors, were also released on the label. Alpert also tackled other forms of media, exhibiting his abstract expressionist paintings and co-producing a number of Broadway successes including Angels in America and Jelly's Last Jam. He also established the Herb Alpert Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to establishing educational, arts, and environmental programs for children. - Jason Ankeny of www.allmusicguide.com Reviews Sound: Passion Dance is presented in 20-bit DTS 5.1 audio. Passion Dance also brings back original mixer Alan Meyerson, who provides his thoughts in the DTS CD's liner notes about his initial experiences mixing for surround music. His discussion of how he took advantage of the format's unlimited palette is reflected well in the mix itself, which does a terrific job taking Alpert's latin and jazz-driven (he was a member of the Tijuana Brass) sound and spreading it agressively and often beautifully throughout the entire listening space. And there's quite a few instruments requiring space throughout the album; congas, drums, guitar, bass, keyboards, trumpet, saxophone, piano and more come in and out at some point or another. Surrounds find themselves with quite a bit of work to do as they take on a good deal of the congos, bongos, drums and other instruments, while main instruments receive focus from the front three main speakers. The majority of the album is instrumental, although there are a few tracks where vocals play a part, such as on "Baila Conmigo ", where vocals come mainly from the front - along with a little re-inforcement from the surrounds. The 5.1 presentation is at its most engaging during the upbeat numbers where the high-energy percussion fills the room and provides an immersive experience for the listener, such as on "Stormy Sunday ". Even the subtler songs are enjoyably presented though, especially with this edition's superior audio quality. Audio quality was superb throughout the album. All of the many instruments on display throughout the different tracks came through with exceptional detail and clarity. Mixer Meyerson has really embraced the possibilities in bringing this album to surround-sound, with a really pleasing spread of the instruments around the room, allowing them to be nicely spread around the listening space - with a nice balance, so that no element calls too much attention to itself, as well. There's an enjoyable, appropriate amount of low bass during many of the songs, as well. This is a really enjoyable presentation of excellent music, offering not only top-notch audio quality, but it was a great choice to bring in the original mixer to work on the very enjoyable and successful surround-sound edition.
