Pantera was an American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas, formed by the Abbott brothers, Vinnie Paul (drums) and "Dimebag " Darrell (guitar), then known as Diamond Darrell, in 1981. Bassist Rex Brown would join in 1982 and in 1987 Phil Anselmo would become the group's lead vocalist, completing the band's most successful lineup that would remain together for 16 years. Although initially influenced by 1970s metal bands such as Kiss and Van Halen (Dime had stated many times that his main influences were Ace Frehley of Kiss and Eddie Van Halen of Van Halen); Pantera's style would change by the late '80s, showing a greater influence from thrash metal. From there, Pantera became one of the most celebrated heavy metal bands of the 1990s. The band has received accolades such as ranking 45th on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock " and fifth on MTV's "Top 10 Greatest Heavy Metal Bands of All-Time. " Jason Birchmeier of Allmusic.com states that "there was no greater metal band during the early to mid-'90s than Pantera. " Critic Greg Prato describes their guitarist Dimebag as "one of the most influential stylists in modern metal. " Remembered for his amiable nature and rapport with fans, Abbott frequently appeared in guitar magazines and in readers' polls, where he was often included in the top ten metal guitarist spots. In addition, he wrote a long-running Guitar World magazine column. "The thing about us is that we always stayed on the ground level with the fans,” proclaimed the guitarist, “We never rode above the fans – I’m a fuckin’ fan myself – and we always had great interaction with them. They’re us, we’re them, we’re all for one and stronger than all.”  In 1993 at Guitar World’s request, the Dime compiled a list of 12 tunes he regarded as pivotal to his development as a player. After he’d completed his list, Darrell commented, “One thing holds true for each of these bands—they all jammed. If kids today want to put a band together and kick some serious ass, it’s important for them to go back and check out these songs. " Number one on his list: “Eruption” Van Halen and GUITARIST: EDDIE VAN HALEN. “Van Halen was a huge influence on me, and ‘Eruption’ was the song that really leaped off that first Van Halen album. I was a little kid when I first heard it, and I couldn’t believe how Eddie just ripped the strings off his guitar. He played with a fierce aggression—and his guitar sound was unbeatable. That dive bomb sound effect at the song’s end sounded like the world was coming to an end. “Because Eddie was so hardcore about his guitar, he made me look at the instrument in a different way—more as a tool to screw around with than something you must play very carefully.” Van Halen played in Midland, TX a few weeks prior to Dime's murder was it was the first time Dime ever got to meet Eddie Van Halen. They hung out before and after the show. He even played Eddie's rig at soundcheck. He told his girlfriend in the limo after the show â€” which Van Halen provided — “How cool is that?” If I died tonight, it wouldn’t matter, ’cause I’ve done everything now, I’ve met Eddie Van Halen!” At Dimebag's memorial in December of 2004 Eddie Van Halen placed his original black with yellow stripes guitar (commonly called "bumblebee ") signed with the words "It's yours now, Darrell. " into his KISS casket where it was buried with him. Dime had mentioned to Ed that he liked that color combination the best of Ed's guitars (this guitar appears on the back sleeve of Van Halen's second album "Van Halen II "), and Eddie had promised to paint one that way for him. Van Halen had told Dime's family that he would be putting a guitar in the coffin at the service, but it wasn’t the guitar expected. He later explained, “Dime was an original and only an original deserves the original!”       Additional Information about Vulgar Display of PowerPortions of this page Copyright 1948 - 2008 Muze Inc. With a rougher image and a more focused, aggressive sound than in their hairspray and spandex days on an independent label, Texas natives Pantera made a serious dent in the heavy music scene with the major label release of COWBOYS FROM HELL, which inspired radio play and MTV support. While Metallica and Megadeth were watering down their approach for a more mainstream sound, Pantera got harder with VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER. From the moment vocalist Phil Anselmo screams his first "Revenge! " in "Mouth for War, " the stage is set. Drummer Vinnie Paul showcases relentless technical prowess thrashing out complex double-bass drum patterns in "A New Level " and "By Demons be Driven, " while guitarist Diamond Darrell's seemingly endless supply of hard-grooving, blues-inspired hooks are the heart of "No Good " and "Live in a Hole. " In the emotional power-ballad "Hollow, " the song's protagonist faces the heartache of having a friend trapped in a coma; and just as in the epic "Cemetery Gates " from COWBOYS FROM HELL, Anselmo continues to struggle with the consequences of fate and the will of the world. Editorial reviews ..one of the most satisfying heavy metal records since Metallica's early-80s cult days...11 caustic songs of unabashed brute force...a fully realized album that goes way beyond metal's usual crunch-and-burn.. - Rating: AEntertainment Weekly  (03/06/1992)Included in Q's 50 Heaviest Albums of All Time - ...Pantera's new, heavier direction...was succinctly summed up by 'A New Level's sludge-thick chorus and the neck-snapping riffage of bile-flecked hate anthem 'F***ing Hostile'...Q  (07/01/2001)
